Destiny 2 Servers Struggle with ‘The Final Shape’ Expansion Launch

As expected, the highly anticipated launch of Destiny 2’s final Light and Darkness expansion, “The Final Shape,” has overwhelmed the game’s servers. The expansion went live at 1 PM ET, coinciding with the regular weekly reset, and since then, players have faced significant difficulties logging in.

Although pre-loading the game was available for the past day, the primary issue has been getting past the login screen. Currently, most players aren’t even placed in a queue; instead, they are met with messages indicating that the servers are entirely offline.

Steam alone reported 220,000 concurrent players, all unable to move past the sign-in screen. This number doesn’t include the substantial console player base, suggesting a massive influx of players trying to access the game simultaneously. The concurrent player numbers are the highest since the launch of the “Lightfall” expansion, which set a record with 316,000 PC players. Given the current situation, “The Final Shape” appears poised to break that record, if it hasn’t already.

The “Lightfall” launch was relatively smooth despite the high traffic, but “The Final Shape” is proving more challenging. Thirty minutes post-launch, the servers were still down, causing concern among players eager to dive into the new content. Bungie has yet to release an official update, but it’s clear they are working diligently to resolve the issues and bring the servers back online.

As players wait for the servers to stabilize, it’s important to remain patient. Even once logged in, there may still be issues with error codes and connectivity, as has been common in previous expansions. Bungie is undoubtedly working hard to address these problems, and updates are expected throughout the day.

Stay tuned for further updates on server status and login issues as they develop.
