Electric vehicles (EVs) proved their mettle during Dubai’s heaviest rainfall in 75 years. While traditional gasoline cars sputtered out in the floodwaters, Teslas and Porsches were seen powering through, leaving many social media users amazed.
The downpour, measured to be a year’s worth of rain in a single day, overwhelmed Dubai’s drainage system, causing widespread flooding. However, EVs, with their sealed battery packs and electric motors, were able to continue operating even with water submerging significant portions of the vehicles.
Videos circulating online show a Tesla Model 3 and a Porsche Taycan navigating floodwaters that reached alarming heights. The Tesla driver appeared unfazed as the car pushed through the water, while the Taycan was even seen with water briefly crossing its windshield.
While Tesla doesn’t recommend driving through deep water, these Dubai flood events highlight a potential advantage of EVs over traditional gasoline cars.
Experts Advise Caution
Social media users expressed surprise at the EVs’ ability to handle the floods. However, experts advise caution. Even EVs can be damaged by water intrusion, especially during prolonged submersion.
