Stargazers in the Czech Republic, rejoice! A powerful geomagnetic storm brewing thanks to the sun’s recent activity could paint the night sky with the dazzling Northern Lights this weekend.
Dr. Petr Horálek, an astronomer at the Institute of Physics in Opava, predicts a good chance of witnessing the aurora borealis on both Friday and Saturday nights, with possibilities increasing throughout the next few days.
“This is due to a surge in solar activity,” explains Dr. Horálek. “The sun unleashed a barrage of ten powerful solar flares in just the last 24 hours! These eruptions are sending energized particles hurtling towards Earth, potentially triggering geomagnetic storms that could last through the weekend.”
The good news doesn’t stop there. This celestial event coincides with a new moon, minimizing light pollution that can often obscure faint auroras. Additionally, weather forecasts predict clear skies, especially on Friday night, offering prime viewing conditions.
However, Dr. Horálek cautions that Czech Republic’s auroras are typically subtle. “They might appear as faint reddish glows or wispy curtains,” he says. “If you’re not sure what you’re seeing, don’t be discouraged! Experienced skywatchers can help you distinguish the aurora from light pollution.”
So, bundle up, grab your camera (if you’re feeling adventurous), and head to a dark location away from city lights. You might just witness a breathtaking display of nature’s light show!
