Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, affecting millions of people every year. One of the most effective ways to prevent skin cancer is by using sunscreen regularly.
However, a recent study by Orlando Health Cancer Institute has revealed a disturbing trend: many young adults are falling victim to myths and misinformation about sunscreen on social media.
The study found that 14% of young adults (aged 18-35) believe sunscreen is more harmful than sun exposure. This misconception can have serious consequences, as UV rays from the sun are the leading cause of skin cancer. Doctors are urging people to be wary of online trends and misinformation, emphasizing that the benefits of sunscreen far outweigh any potential risks.
“The main concern I see spread online is that the downsides of sunscreen are so severe it’s better to risk skin cancer,” says Dr. Rajesh Nair, an oncology surgeon at Orlando Health Cancer Institute. “Melanoma is becoming increasingly common in young people, and simply wearing sunscreen can significantly reduce the risk of this life-threatening disease.”
The study also highlighted other concerning trends, such as the belief that drinking water can prevent sunburn (nearly 25% of young adults surveyed believed this). Unfortunately, there’s no scientific evidence to support such claims.
Sunscreen use is crucial for sun protection, but using it correctly is equally important. Dr. Nair recommends applying sunscreen liberally at least 15 minutes before sun exposure to allow for proper absorption. Reapplication is key, especially every two hours or more often if sweating or swimming.
Sunscreen comes in various forms, so finding one that suits your skin type is important. If you have concerns about certain ingredients, there are mineral-based sunscreens that are free of chemicals like avobenzene and oxybenzone.
Remember, sun safety is vital for everyone. Don’t be swayed by online myths. By applying sunscreen correctly and regularly, you can significantly reduce your risk of skin cancer and protect your skin’s health.
