Toyota has unveiled the all-new Urban Cruiser SUV, developed in partnership with Indian automaker Maruti Suzuki. The Urban Cruiser, based on the Maruti Suzuki EVX platform, blends Suzuki’s design language with Toyota’s modern styling cues. Larger than the regular model, it measures 4,365 mm in length, 1,795 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height.
Offering two electrified powertrain options, the entry-level model features Suzuki’s “Neo Drive” mild-hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-liter K-Series engine with a 12V ISG and a small 6Ah Li-ion battery. Meanwhile, the top-spec hybrid variant utilizes Toyota’s full-hybrid technology, combining a 1.5-liter engine with a stronger electric motor, ISG, and a larger lithium-ion battery. Toyota claims the Urban Cruiser Hybrid to be the most efficient in its class, particularly excelling in urban driving conditions. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of features, the Urban Cruiser boasts a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, and more. Safety equipment includes 6 airbags, though advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are not offered.
Production of the Toyota Urban Cruiser will take place at Maruti Suzuki’s Bidadi plant in Karnataka, India, alongside its Maruti-badged sibling. Expected to hit the Indian market in 2024, the SUV will compete with the Hyundai Creta and Skoda Kushaq.
This collaboration between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki highlights the automakers’ efforts to leverage each other’s strengths and address the growing demand for electrified and feature-rich SUVs in the Indian market.
