The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department (LFCHD) has declared an outbreak of whooping cough, also known as pertussis. This comes after nine confirmed cases were identified since late April, with three new cases reported on May 20th.
New Cases Span Age Groups and Locations
The most recent cases involve an additional student at Lafayette High School, a young student at Sts. Peter and Paul Regional Catholic School, and an individual in their 80s. This highlights the concern that whooping cough can affect people of all ages. While previously reported cases were concentrated in school-aged children, the latest developments show a wider spread.
LFCHD Encourages Vaccination and Awareness
The Health Department is urging residents to be vigilant for whooping cough symptoms and ensure their children are up-to-date on vaccinations, including the booster shot. Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness spread through coughing and sneezing. While it can affect anyone, it can be particularly dangerous for infants and individuals with chronic health conditions.

Symptoms to Watch Out For
Those who may have been exposed or are experiencing potential whooping cough symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. These symptoms can include:
- Persistent cough that worsens at night, often described as a “whooping” sound
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Fever (may not always be present)
- Vomiting after coughing
Importance of Vaccination
Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent whooping cough. The LFCHD recommends all children receive the recommended DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis) vaccine series and the Tdap booster shot for adolescents and adults.
